Named after Amstel River and located in North Holland, Amstelveen promises a perfect nature trip with green land, parks, rural areas and old buildings around. Especially Amsterdamse Bos is definitely a must-see place.
The ideal period to visit Amstelveen is spring. Compared to summer, there is much less crowd and the flight tickets are cheaper. Plus the climate is less sweltering in spring and you can wander around the city as much as you like. Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is mostly used to come here whereas there are also buses, trams and trains from closer cities. Within the city, bicycle will be more than enough.
Accommodation alternative are limited here in Amstelveen. Middle-class hotels, hostels and cabins around Amsterdamse Bos provide service rather than high-class luxurious ones. Camping Hostel Amsterdamse Bos is a good and economic alternative, and Grand Hotel Amstelveen is one of the best hotels in this city.
First destination is, of course, Amsterdamse Bos that is surely the most restful and admirable spot. Wester-Amstel is the second one, and then I go on with museum tours. Amsteltuin, Museum Jan van der Togt and the Cobra Museum of Modern Art are must-see museums. A little jungle trekking is the following and the last activity of the first day.
On the second day, I stop by at Clara Maria Cheese Farm and Flog Factory. This place is totally a tourist spot, because you have the chance to taste fresh cheeses and see how flogs are made as you walk around. I buy a couple of souvenirs and go visit local farms of Geitenboerderij Ridammerhoeve families where I experience a true village life.
The last destination is Stadshart Amstelveen that gets more crowded at nights. Here you find lots of stores to have fun and buy souvenirs. De Jong Dikkert is where I have dinner. Not only food, but also experience of eating dinner inside a historical windmill is wonderful. Those who want to taste traditional Dutch delicacies; Lute is the restaurant you should go.
