A Mini Thessaloniki Guide

Daily trip in Thessaloniki ✓ Amazing city tour ✓ Thessaloniki travel tips ✓ What to do in Thessaloniki?

Being the second largest city in Greece and the capital of Greek Macedonia, Thessaloniki owns an historical significance since 315 BC, which can not be despised. Just because it’s not a large city, we packed our things and went for 2 nights 3 days. We expected much, because it’s the hometown of mythologhy, ancient Greece and the main source of Western cultures. As a footnote, the city has been home to Roman Empire, Byzantines and Ottoman Empire, which adds value to it’s influence.

The weather was cold but still a favorable climate, so we were cool with it. Having the thrill to explore and touch what the history has brought to modern-days, we arrived to Thessaloniki Airport, took the bus 78 to the city centre, found our hotel, and now we are ready to explore the history of this ancient city.

First of all, we started with the coastline of the city, which is ideal for both having a walk or sipping your Greek wine in a cafe. We took the path on the seaside till we reached the White Tower, Thessaloniki’s most famous landmark. We had a tour in it’s museum, and took the street Tsimski, the famous shopping address of the city. We made our shoppings, which was particularly cheap, and reached to Aristotelous Square, the very central point of the city.

Many cafes and restaurants are located around the square, and it is alive even after midnight. Thessaloniki is the right address for night-outs and a heaven of food & beverage. We shot our selfies with the perfect view and sat to eat our bacon cheeseburgers. We prayed in the Orthodox Metropolitan Church, and went to rest in our rooms. We made all of this on foot, you can easily tour the city without using any transportation method. (ps: Taxi is very cheap)

In the night, we went to eat the famous Souvlaki in a buffet near Aristotelous Square, and choose Electra hotel’s rooftop to have something to drink, which serves stunning view of the city centre and the seaside.

The second day was the best day in Thessaloniki, we woke up early in the morning, took a city map and started to explore the ancient face of the town. We headed to Tribeca Cafe, to try the famous Frape. Later on, we headed to see the Ratonda, the Arc of Galerius and many different churches.

As you’re walking on the streets, you can see many open air museums (the ancient ruins of the old town i.e. Anaktoriko Sigkrotima Galeriou). We prayed in Panagia Dexia Church, and went directly to Atatürk’s House, where the founder of Turkish Republic was born. We took a walk to Hagia Sofia, a very important pray point for Christians, prayed once more and made our wishes while lighting candles and saw the Roman Forum (another open air museum) during our walk to the hotel. We took a sleep and went to a Greek Tavern to drink Ouzo, where people are so warm-blooded (as all Greek people).

In our last day, we saw the Church of Panagia Chalkeon, and ate our extremely delicious Croissant with creme & blueberries in Estrella. Took the bus 78 again and turn back to Istanbul. It was a small city and you can reach all the destinations on foot, will be better in summer but still very pleasant to explore in November. Above all, it can be counted as a travel spot to eat, drink and night-outs. Greek people are very nice and kind, they can help and guide you, and during our 3 days holiday, we didn’t experience any trouble with the security.
